Lecce is the baroque masterpiece of southern Italy often described as the “Florence of the South” with its wonderful confection of architecture sculpted from the soft local sandstone.  A graceful and relaxed city full of surprises.

Day 1:

Arrive at Bari or Brindisi for a private transfer to your hotel in Lecce.

In the early evening we’ll take a leisurely stroll with our local guide to a stunning neoclassical palace, originally built in the 1500’s.  With the help of the chef and a glass of wine or two we’ll create our own dinner featuring local delicacies.   A perfect way to break the ice with your fellow travellers. D

Day 2:

After a leisurely breakfast our guide will lead us on a walking tour of Lecce, once a Greek settlement and later an important centre of the Roman  Empire.   Your afternoon is free to continue exploring this fascinating city before we head to one of the famous wineries in Salice Salentino, arguably the most important wine district in all of Italy.  BD

Boutique small group travel tour Puglia & Amalfi Coastpuglia-12

Puglia is rich in UNESCO World Heritage sites and today we’ll be heading to Matera Matera, one of the ancient world’s city centres. Traces of human settlements go back to the pre-historic times.  It’s impossible not to marvel and wonder at what living was like in these cave dwellings known as “Sassi’’ in which frescoed churches and houses were established and where families were still living until 1952.   You might also recognize it as the location chosen for the Mel Gibson movie ‘’Passion’’.   BL

Day 7:

Join us on another bike tour this morning or just enjoy the facilities of the villa.  After lunch, we’re in for a treat as we visit the famous and mysterious Citadel and Castel del Monte.   A marvel of medieval military architecture and a successful blend of elements from classical antiquity, Islamic Orient and north European Cistercian Gothic.

ACCOMMODATION

Itinerary for this boutique small group tour to Russia

DAYS 1-6

Day 1:  Check-in at hour hotel (pictured) and meet the rest of the group for pre-dinner drinks and dinner. D

Day 2:  We’ll take a morning tour of the city to orient ourselves including Arbat, one of the most popular places in Moscow and Sparrow Hill, high above the city providing a perfect panoramic view. In addition, we’ll visit the fabulous halls of the Bolshoi and go backstage to see what audiences never see.  Originally opened in 1856 it has recently undergone six years of renovations.  Afternoon and evening at leisure.  BL

Day 3: After a leisurely breakfast our first destination today will be the Moscow Kremlin State Historical and Cultural Museum and Heritage Site incorporating the Armoury Chamber and the architectural ensemble of Cathedral Square, including cathedrals, churches, the Patriach’s Palace and the Ivan the Great Bell-Tower complex.  Red Square remains, as it has been for centuries, the heart and soul of Russia.  The 16th Century St Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most famous pieces of architecture in the world.  The square is also home to the constructionist pyramid of Lenin’s Mausoleum. Our day will conclude with a culinary master class and dinner.  BLD

Day 4: Travelling a short distance from the city this morning we’ll reach the small town of Sergieve Posad, famous worldwide for the beauty of its monastery.  A visit to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is not to be missed. With its churches and cathedrals it is considered the heart of the Russian Orthodox faith.  BL

Day 5: Today we explore a more recent history with a visit to Bunker 42, and its role in the Cold War. A nondescript neoclassical building on a quiet street in the centre of the city looks very ordinary.  However, the building was just a shell and served as an entry to a 7000 sq-metres space – one of the major secret objects of the USSR. An underground complex was built here in the 1950s as the threat of nuclear war became a reality. Up to 30000 people could live and work there for 90 days without assistance from the outside world.  After lunch we’ll take a ride on the Moscow Metro, generally acknowledged to be the most beautiful underground transport system in the world.  We’ll discover why.  BLD

Day 6: Our last full day in Moscow, we’ll visit a renowned bakery and learn some of the tricks of the trade.   You’ll have time at leisure to further explore the city there’s so much more to see and experience.  GUM is a not to be missed site. Directly opposite the Mausoleum, on the eastern side of the square, lies the building housing Russia’s most famous shopping mall – the State Department Store, GUM. Since the fall of communism, several other shopping centers and hypermarkets have sprung up to rival it in prestige, but GUM retains its status as a consumer Mecca for visitors to Moscow. In the Soviet Union, the top floor was home to Section 100, a secret clothing store only open to the highest echelons of the party. Nowadays the rows of exclusive boutiques are accessible to anyone with a platinum card. That said, the building itself is glorious, and there are still a few more interesting relics of a bygone era on the higher floors that make it well worth exploring.  BD

Boutique small group tour to Costa Rica and Panama

Day 17:  A morning departure for our flight to San Blas Islands. The islands of the San Blas Archipelago are strung out along the Caribbean coast of Panama from the Golfo de San Blas nearly all the way to the Colombian border. San Blas is a series of 378 islands of which only 49 are inhabited by the fiercely independent Kuna Indians. Although only a 20-minute plane ride away from Panama City, a trip to the San Blas islands will transport us 20 centuries into the past.

The Kuna Indians run all the islands as an autonomous province with minimal interference from the national government. They have maintained their own economic system, language, customs and culture, similarly, a distinctive dress, legends, music and dance and thus have avoided traditional tourism development. The economy of the islands is based on coconut sales, fishing and tourism. Facilities are few and simple, as equally is the food.

Our accommodation will be in Yandup Lodge. The rooms are kuna style (wooden cabins over the water or ocean front) and have Orthopedic mattresses, ceiling fans, balcony, solar powered electricity, hammocks, private bathroom, mosquito nets and closets.  BLD

Day 18: San Blas is famous for one of its arts and crafts, the mola. Kuna women make rainbow colored fabrics, emblazoned with fish, birds, jungle animals and geometric designs that would impress Picasso himself. The men still fish from canoes as they did before Columbus came. They still run up to the corner coconut palm trees for something fresh and cool to drink each morning, just as they have for untold centuries.

Today we’ll have an opportunity to visit a neighbouring island and learn more about the Kuna and their traditions. BLD

Day 19:  Time to leave  island life to return to the city.  An early morning departure and the rest of the day free for any last minute shopping or sightseeing before our farewell dinner this evening at one of Panama City’s finest restaurants.  BD

Day 20:  Checking out of the hotel a group transfer will be provided to the international airport for your onward or homeward journey. B

A Cultural Immersion into Old Mexico

boutique-small-group-travel-mexico-ajijic

Fully escorted 16 days tour.

Saturday 9th to Sunday 24th November 2019

Saturday 18th January to Sunday 2nd February 2020

Join us for this immersion into Mexico’s cultural and artistic heartland. The delightful village of Ajijic (pronounced Ah-hee-heek)  is home to  an active and engaged ex-pat community who chose it for its perfect climate, artistic community and friendly and welcoming locals. We’re about to experience ‘slow travel’ at its very best as we are drawn into the rhythms of daily life.

At over 5,000 feet (1,600 metres) in elevation Ajijic  is a unique village located in the colourful State of Jalisco.   It nestles in Mexico’s Sierra Madre Mountains on the northern shore of Lake Chapala.  Only 30 minutes from Guadalajara international airport, Ajijic remains a quaint cobble-stoned village, a rustic reminder of an earlier time.  The Lake Chapala area has a year round moderate climate.  National Geographic magazine rates it as one of the three best climates in the world.

Having developed warm friendships with a variety of local people, we’re lucky to be able to share our knowledge and give exceptional access to private homes and opportunities to meet local artisans with like-minded travellers.

The breadth of local talent means that we can offer a range of activities or classes for your free days such as painting, photography, birding or cooking.  Classes can be arranged for individuals as well as small groups.

There’s something in the very spirit of this village which lingers long after you leave and will most likely draw you back.

Our tour also includes a stay in one of the prettiest towns in Mexico, San Miguel de Allende, famous for its intense cultural and artistic life, as well as its striking architecture.  Our final destination on this tour is Mexico City where we’ll be staying in the heart of the historic centre, Zocalo.  The National Palace Metropolitan Cathedral, Templo Mayor and Palace of Fine Arts are all within a few minutes walk.  En-route we’ll explore one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in Mexico – the Aztec pyramids of Teotihuacan.

The highlight for me was that the trip was so personal and people involved.  We met wonderful interesting locals and were invited into their homes.

What an amazing experience!  You could actually put your arms around this village, Ajijic.  Thanks to Big Yellow Suitcase every day had a WOW factor.  The exceptional local knowledge of the tour leaders was willingly shared among the group.  A great experience, great company, and amazing tour leaders – I can’t wait for the next tour.

Mexico-just go & do it with Big Yellow Suitcase.

There were fascinating guides who were knowledgeable & took you to hidden gems.

There was plenty of diversity from art & craft viewing, history, food & musical experiences , cooking class where you learnt more than cooking, visits to markets, behind wall tours of homes, & the fabulous & unique ‘Feria’-showcasing the very best of artisans & their skill from around Mexico. For that you need an extra suitcase as the beauty is mesmerizing & irresistible to the pocket!

Everywhere we went I was surprised & delighted.

The hotels were delightful & Wendy knew all the best places for meals & drinks.

I have no hesitation in recommending Wendy & her tours of Mexico.

Go & be amazed!

Itinerary

Day 1. Meteora / Kalambaka (B,D)

This morning we will be met by our local tour guide and coach at a central Athens hotel and depart for the drive towards the north. On the way we will be passing by Thermopylae and make a short stop to admire the statue of Leonidas, King of Sparta. Further drive and arrival at the village of Kalambaka. We will settle in our hotel and have a bit of time to refresh, and then continue for our visit to Meteora. Amazing rock formations, like towers of sandstone, stand ageless, and have provided sacred retreat for monks over the centuries. A number of monasteries are hidden on top of Meteora. The view over the plain is breathtaking. Meteora is considered among the most beautiful areas of mainland Greece and belongs to Unesco’s list of world heritage monuments. We will be visiting at least two of the monasteries and later, we will head back to Kalambaka to a local restaurant for our dinner with views to Meteora. Overnight in Kalambaka.

Day 2. Delphi / Delphi (B, L, D)

Delphi

We leave Meteora behind this morning and start heading south again, this time, crossing the mountains of central Greece towards mount Parnassos, and the village of Delphi, which used to be the most sacred place in the world and a pilgrimage center for many centuries in antiquity. During your visit, you will admire the Sanctuary of Apollo, walk the Sacred way, and visit the temple of Apollo, home of Pythia (the oracle). We continue to the local museum with the famous bronze statue of the Charioteer. Later, we will continue to settle in our hotel in Delphi. In the evening, we will walk to a local restaurant and enjoy our dinner with views to the Corinthian gulf. Overnight in Delphi.

Day 3. Arachova, Monastery of Ossios Loukas / Dimitsana. (B,L D)

Monastery of Ossios Loukas

Today, we head towards the Peloponnese. We depart from Delphi and after a short drive will make a brief stop at the mountain village of Arachova, a famous weekend retreat for Athenians over the winter months. We’ll take a walk to explore the village, known for the production of local cheese, pasta, and rugs. We continue our journey and make a short deviation to visit the monastery of Ossios Loukas, hidden in the mountains of central Greece, in a quiet and relaxing setting. We will admire the unique frescoes and mosaics and feel the Divine atmosphere. We continue our drive and as we reach the Peloponnese, we’ll make another stop to admire the impressive Corinth canal. Our journey will find us crossing the Arcadian mountains to arrive in Dimitsana, our base for the following 5 nights. After we settle in our hotel, we will enjoy a welcome drink followed by dinner in one of the local traditional tavernas. Overnight in Dimitsana.

Day 4. Dimitsana, cooking class / Dimitsana (B,D)

Pastitsio

The Peloponnese has a wild, untamed beauty perfectly reflected in its mountain villages like Dimitsana. After breakfast, a walking tour of this village will reveal its unique spirit. We will then drive a little further to visit the unique open-air Water Power Museum and then proceed to a local family tavern where we will meet the family and the learn the secrets of making “pastitsio”, an authentic “Greek” dish. After our cooking lesson, we will enjoy the fruits of our labour, before returning to our hotel.

Day 5. Bassae, Andritsena, Psari, Vytina / Dimitsana (B,L,D)

Vytina

Today starts with a visit to Bassae, an awe-inspiring archaeological site on a remote mountain top secreted high above Andritsena village reached by a twisting mountain road clearly built by the road Gods from Olympia. The well-preserved Temple of Apollo Epicurius (designed by the same architect who created Athens’ Parthenon) occupies a commanding view overlooking the Aegean Sea far to the south. Bassae is the first UNESCO World Heritage site of Greece. Our departing route will take us to the small, but significant, mountain village of Andritsena – seemingly populated by more happy goats than people. A few kilometres before Dimitsana we’ll stop at tiny Psari village. Here we’ll have the opportunity to taste a variety of more traditional products, made exclusively by the local women, have a tour of an unusual but very interesting museum demonstrating the life of this small village and enjoy a delicious lunch . This evening we’ll head to Vytina, a favourite winter bolthole for Athens’ smart skiing set where we’ll enjoy a short walking tour of the village & dinner at a traditional local taverna.

Day 6. Olympia, Olive Oil farm / Dimitsana (B,L)

Dimitsana

After breakfast depart for a day visit to Ancient Olympia. This bucolic site is amongst the most picturesque in Greece; not hard to imagine a team of discus throwers lounging under a tree before a gruelling competition or runners preparing to sprint the surprisingly intact stadium grounds, feet rests at the starting line still visibly carefully carved in the marble. A complete tour of the famous archaeological site and museum, will be followed by a visit to a local farm producing both olive oil and wine. Here we’ll stop for lunch and to taste some of the wines and many different handmade dishes using products fresh from the farm. Fresh Feta cheese, homemade bread, ‘Horta’ salad greens cooked in fresh olive oil, ‘Spanakopita’ pie, all from a wild garden and prepared with love and Greek hospitality. A tour of the farm will complete this afternoon’s visit. After a late lunch we head back to Dimitsana via scenic narrow roads through vineyards, fig tree groves and fields full of sunflowers. Tonight is at your leisure, a perfect opportunity to sample one of the small local tavernas you spotted earlier.

Day 7. Hike to Lousios Gorge / Dimitsana (B,L)

Lousios Gorge

After breakfast, it’s time to partake in a gentle hike into the Lousios Gorge, the best way to explore the pristine nature of the Peloponnese heartland. Descending into the Gorge is like floating into a familiar yet foreign past. Will an echo of democracy whistle from the walls? Old Greek Orthodox monasteries are built on both sides of the gorge, literally hanging from the rocks. The monks built monasteries to prevent raids from Venetian pirates, wayward marauding Ottoman Turks and nosy recalcitrant neighbours — and for peaceful meditation. We’ll visit a few and meet the monks who live there, persisting in an ascetic life as they have for hundreds of years. After our walk, it’s time to return to Dimitsana for lunch at a local taverna. Dinner tonight is at your leisure, providing ample opportunity to compare food prepared with the town’s best local organic produce.

Day 8. Nemea, Winery visit, Visit Mycenae / Nafplion (B,L,D)

Nafplio

After breakfast, depart for the beautiful seaside town of Nafplio. On the way, visit Ancient Nemea, the place where the Nemean Games were once held, similar to the Olympic Games, and where according to Greek mythology, Heracles defeated the Nemean lion. Today Nemea is also known for its exceptional wines, which are considered to be amongst the best in Greece. Visit one of the most esteemed wineries for a private wine tasting followed by lunch. After lunch it’s on to the well-known Mycenae, one of the major ancient centres of Greek civilisation, also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here Agamemnon and Clytemnestra ruled over the most powerful city-state in Bronze Age Greece. The Trojan Wars began here. Homer’s inspiration for The Iliad & The Odyssey sprang from Mycenae. These old stones speak volumes. Arrive into Nafplio to our boutique hotel and enjoy a late dinner at a local taverna.

Day 9. Nafplio, Epidaurus / Nafplion (B,L)

Asclepeion at Epidaurus

Nafplio is one of the most beautiful towns in Greece. A walking tour this morning will give you the chance to experience that beauty before leaving for an afternoon tour of Epidaurus with its famous Asclepeion, founded by Asclepius the ancient God of Healing. Even today the great public gathering place boasts the best acoustics in Greece. Still used as a performance space during special festivals, this is the best preserved ancient theatre in Greece. Think Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripedes; all their great plays have been performed here, way back then and now. On the way back to Nafplio, visit Tolo, a small seaside town for an expansive seafood lunch. Dinner back in Nafplio is at your leisure, a wonderful opportunity to wander along the harbour front for a relaxed waterside meal?

Day 10. Tour of Bourtzi Island, afternoon at leisure (B,D)

Bourtzi Island

After breakfast this morning we’ll board a private boat for a tour of Bourtzi, a small islet located at the entrance of Nafplio’s picturesque harbour. An old Venetian Fortress completely occupies the islet to which it owes its name. After a short visit we’ll head to a beautiful beach for a bit of serenity under the bright Greek sun with plenty of time for a swim. We return to Nafplio in time for a late lunch. Remainder of the afternoon is at your leisure. Tonight’s farewell dinner at one of the city’s best restaurants is a fitting Opa! to the Peloponnesus.

Day 11. Departure (B)

After breakfast we take the road back to Athens, directly to the airport for our return flight home.
